And costing your business money…
Using AI as the end all be all for your brand assets is killing your brand, it’s individuality and making you lose money.
Now you might be wondering how did I come to this conclusion, well the answer is pretty simple. I needed a service.
I needed someone that provides transportation services and while scrolling through the many many companies and looking for one near me, I came across an ad for a company that was completely AI generated.
The ad itself was illegible at some parts, aesthetically unpleasing in others and it would turn out that this would not be the last ad I would see that looked exactly like this.
Apparently the latest trend amongst businesses is having the same style of AI generated ads to the point that from a consumer/customer standpoint, I can’t tell which company is which anymore.
Below are examples of what I have come across, all from different companies.
Looking at the three examples you’ll notice that they are all basically the same thing but in different colours. They share similar layouts, the weird grainy background and overlay and even the same font-face in some instances, these three ads could very well be from the same company and it would not be surprising if it was.
And it’s not just small businesses that are using these ads, I’ve seen these ads come up from large corporations and even from graphic design agencies which honestly had me like…

But back to the point, using these generated ads not only pushes persons away from purchasing but leads to your brand being unmemorable. Think about it, if you and the 10 other {insert business type} companies are using A.I, what is going to make the customer choose you vs the other 10? What makes you different? What makes you unique?
And thats why the title of this post is AI is killing brand individuality – BECAUSE IT IS.
I made a video ranting about this same issue as well and the feedback I got from all the platforms boiled down to:
“It makes the company look lazy”
“It’s ugly and confusing”
“I never remember the information from the ad itself”
“I immediately scroll away”
Now when you put these things into perspective you’re not just losing in the game of brand perception, you’re losing MONEY.
Now of course this blog isn’t to shame businesses or business owners, as a small business owner myself I understand how simple it can feel to just give all your creative control to the robot, it’s fast, it’s {sometimes} reliable and it can go through several ideas at once in real time and show it to you, but just because you can use these doesn’t mean you necessarily should.
Okay that’s fine but…..
“I’m using AI still, so what do I do?”
Again no {okay maybe some} judgement however it’s not because you’re using AI, it’s that you may be using it just because everyone else is or worse incorrectly for your brand which is why your assets look identical to everyone else’s and does not capture your audience.
So here’s my advice as a designer with 10+ years of experience in this game.
Before you use any of these tool suggested AI or otherwise ask yourself
What do I want these assets to accomplish?
Is the information in this, presented in the best possible way for consumers?
Will this reach my audience?
While you are asking these important questions to yourself, you also should do a brand audit and ensure that you have a proper brand identity complete with logos, typefaces and colors that you will use consistently with your brand everywhere you present it, this ensures that customers always know it’s you no matter where you post. When you have done all of that then do these next steps when using AI to make your ads stand out a bit more.
I get it, AI is so easy to access. All you need to do is type in a prompt and it generates what it thinks you want based on the input, however, I think what businesses seem to forget is that because everyone has access , a lot of the generations will look the same and your brand will be lost in the endless sea of similarity, unable to stand out.
I’m not saying don’t use AI but what I am saying is that less is more when it comes to it’s usage and that when it comes to your own brand and the way it is perceived by clients, you want to be recognisable, memorable and impactful and using the same AI generated ads will simply NOT achieve that.
If you’ve read everything up to this point then that’s great, that means you are serious about your business and its perception to your customers. If you need help with anything feel free to send me mail or leave a comment.

Thank you for this measured approach to this issue.
I was recently looking to buy a fete ticket and I almost didn’t because of how ugly the ad looked. It was a HUGE detractor.
Thank you so much for your comment. A lot of persons are saying the extreme AI use in advertising is detracting them from making purchases and I personally have disregarded companies that use AI like this and so this post felt necessary.
imo ai should only be used for technicality, not for creative endeavours
